I have searched far and wide for the best pick-up lines for runners. After an exhaustive search, I have compiled the following list. (You can thank me at your wedding.)

  1. Excuse me; do these shorts make me look fast?
  2. I like it dirty: I am a trail runner.
  3. You make fartleks sound beautiful.
  4. On a scale of 1 to 10, you are a 26.2!
  5. Dang it! My coach told me not to elevate my heart rate above 165, but then I saw you!
  6. Roses are red, violets are blue; would you mind if I ran with you?
  7. Since distance equals velocity times time, let’s let velocity or time approach infinity, because I want to run all the way with you.
  8. Are your legs sore? Because they’ve been running through my mind all day.
  9. I hope there’s a fireman around, ’cause you’re smokin’ fast!
  10. I am not sure if it was this run or you who just took my breath away.
  11. When I log my run into my journal today, I’ll say I ran with my future husband/wife.
  12. Ouch! I just scraped my knee falling for you.
  13. Was that an earthquake, or are you rocking this run?
  14. Do you know karate? Because you have a great finishing kick!
  15. Did you get lost on the run? Heaven is a long way from here.
  16. Apart from being a running gear model, what do you do for a living?
  17. You run faster than my nose in allergy season!
  18. My love for you is like an ultramarathon. It goes on and on.
  19. Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I pass you more than once?
  20. *At the end of a race* I am like chocolate pudding. I look like crap, but I am sweet as can be!

Salomon X-Trail Run (Malaysia) 2014

strat 12km

I ran this short trail run a week after disastrous TNF100 Hong Kong, still carrying a flu back from Hong Kong; no thanks to viral infection from Cikgu Mijono (my hostel mate in HK).

My condition was not at  100%, i haven’t run all week and yes not even a recovery run. So this was considered as my so called recovery run. Last year this run was held in November (read here) and it was under distance, so this year 10km trail run was upgraded to 12km distance; just to make up for last year lack of distance. More value for money someone said.

As we experiencing running boom in Malaysia currently, this run was held at the same weekend with few other events; namely Cyberjaya Twin City Marathon, Taiping Run and Twilight Trail run in Penang. We as runners are spoiled with options, please choose wisely.

The night before the race, it rained all night. I could imagine a real muddy trail just like Salomon Otterbox Trail run few weeks back. Mud fest here we come!

Met the usual suspects, Khairi Muin and Cikgu Syed aka Cikgu Mijono right before the start. We made a beeline towards the front of the pack as instructed by my sponsor. They need a good photo of me at the starting line.

I was surprised just right before the race start, the MC announced my name and said they’re happy that Salomon brand ambassador (that’s me) are joining the run after the gruelling 100km run in Hong Kong last weekend. You can roll your eyes now !

Thank Puzi for bailing out from this run and going for vacation haha. I feel like that Kilian moment when they introduced him to the crowd and he go in front of the pack and waved. I’m glad that was over quickly and finally we can start the race.

I’m not really fond of any short run distances, because it would be a lung busting effort and you really pressured to run for time unlike in Ultra Marathon.

The men were flagged off about 15 minutes before the women, Khairi and I decided to set a goal before the run – to finish before any women arrived at the finish line. In other words, don’t get chicked! Cikgu Mijono was also in our pact in spite of his endless FB drama lately.

It was a fast race and the route was better than last year, more challenging especially with the slippery surface. More steep inclines and steep downhill, i was enjoying this new route. As always, i’m always struggling at the beginning of the race before finding my rhythm in the middle of the race, nicely warm up and  i could just run a happy pace.

I ran most part of the race with Khairi and Kin Lursan (don’s ask me about this funny name) and set Khairi as my pacer. After getting back from UTCM, i’m happy to see Khairi getting stronger and faster in races. I’m proud of him, finally he found his true ability in running.

finish 12km trailFinishing the race with Khairi hot on my heel.

Finish the race just barely in front of Khairi and ended up in 11th place out of 180 (Men Veteran) 1:17 hour, good enough for me considering it was just a recovery run after TNF100 HK and still carrying a little bit of flu. Plus we finished in front of the Women Champion, main objective completed. Congrats to all runners, we’ll see you next year.

I can see after the race, many runners was satisfied and enjoying this muddy trail race. Maybe we should keep hoping for rain next year because muddy trail is the best kind of run.

OtterBox Salomon Malaysia Trail Run 2014

10527301_10152584448119353_2346428931460762826_n

This was the first event that Action Asia based in Hong Kong organised in Malaysia. Looking on Action Asia broad experiences in organising running events in Hong Kong, i would expect a tough route for this 18km/10km trail race in Janda Baik.

I met Michael, a Canadian based in HK which also the man behind Action Asia at the race kit collection at WoS outlet in the Garden Shopping Complex. He gave me few tips on the route which he and other local runners recced few months earlier.

Detail of the 18km race:

  • 18 km - 767m elevation gain, 769m elevation loss, 516m highest point, 374m lowest point (16 km dirt roads & 2 km cement road)

2 water check points

  • CP1 – 4.8km - cut off is 2 hours (9am)
  • CP2 – 13.5 km - cut off is 5 hours (12 noon)
  • Time limit for 18km is 6 hours (1pm).

This event is a week after my podium finish at 52km race at Putrajaya 100, i was thinking to use this event as part of my preps to TNF HK in two weeks time.

10710630_10152543516342807_1577938644321534581_n-vert

The race started at 7:00 am in Frenz United Football Academy, as usual i took my place at the front with fellow Salomon Team mate Puzi & Maggie for the 18km race.

We started on tarmac going out towards the main road, before turning left into the trail. It was raining heavily a day before the race, i would expect a mud fest during today trail race.

As expected the trail route was not disappointing, it was a tough course. I love it, it had so many inclines and downhill. I was tougher due to the rain which made  it slippery and our shoes was immediately became heavy due to the mud stuck to it. It was futile attempt to stop and try to remove the mud from your shoes.

I was thinking to run light and contemplated to choose the either the bottles system or bladder system. Finally, i decided on bladder system and using the lightest Salomon 3 liter pack.

I ran two rivers during the race, the first river was wide and almost goes up to my knee. I just wade the river and imagine myself crossing the Rucky Chucky River at mile 78. Yeah, one day perhaps. Dream big my friends!

Made the first check point at 4.8km 33:05 mins at position 58. I was still surviving, but all inclines killed me and left me to walk all the way up. Gotta improve on this – here’s to more hill trainings soon.

Halfway through, i felt something wrong. More and more runners starting to overtook me and i felt my feet grew heavier. What’s wrong with me, i asked? I stopped and bang my shoes to nearby rock to get the mud off my shoes, then i remembered i forgot to eat my Powergel plus i didn’t had proper breakfast before the run. I was bonking, as soon as took the gel, i felt lighter and got my feet back.

I felt stronger during the second half, the 10km runners joined us on the trail for the final 8km of the race. Started to overtook 10km and 18 km runners at this point, finally reel in Nik Lursan 5km from the finish, try to look for Khairi Muin but he was to fast for me to catch up.

Check in at CP 2 (13.5km) at 1:52 hours at position 62. Time was running out, but now the trail it’s at my advantage, there’s more downhill now – which i enjoyed so much. Before the final river crossing, there’s a steep slippery downhill. As i arrived the top, i saw two runners overthinking on how to run down.

I just jumped on the slippery trail and started running downhill (skills which i painfully acquired at UTMF & Leadville’s Hope Pass). It was so much fun, just go with the flow boys, you not gonna die – the worst thing that could happen was you just fall on your bum bum.

As i arrived at the river crossings, i saw few runners stuck in the middle of the muddy path before the river. I made a smart move by running around the muddy area and moved quickly to the river. By now, i catch up with my Salomon Team-mate Maggie. I pushed and paced her that final km to the finish and i’m glad she finish up at the podium.

I completed the race at position 50/440 (overall). Finish time 2:11 hours for 18km trail race. I will back next year for this short and challenging race, i hope for rain next year to repeat this mud fest.
