STAND UP AND SHINE WITH THE BEST RUNNERS AT THE MALAYSIA WOMEN MARATHON 2015
Women from all over will be ascending into Shah Alam on the 8th March 2015 to once again run with the best.
11 February 2015, Shah Alam – The Malaysia Women Marathon (MWM) will be held on 8 March 2015, in line with International Women Day. A day that celebrates women’s ability and achievement in various arenas, it also reflects the essence of MWM.
Once again MWM showcases the ability of women to run the marathon, while striving for achievement and growth beyond their expectations. It is the only women marathon across South Asia to Australia, Malaysia that has built a name by having the 4th women marathon in the world.
MWM is a 3-day programme which encompasses a mini expo with introduction of several other marathons in the region and a women dialogue session from 6-7th March 2015 at the official hotel, Concorde Hotel Shah Alam. On race day, the public can also expect a carnival atmosphere, with a picnic site and a mini food fest in conjunction with the celebration of International Women Day.
Residents of Shah Alam and the nearby townships are encouraged to join in the festivities at Dataran Kemerdekaan in the municipality of Shah Alam (Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam). The fun festivities will start from 8am onwards.
MWM has progressed from having 2200 participants at its inception in 2012 to 4500 last year. So far, the number of participants continues to rival last year. This is encouraging as it shows more women are involved in distance running. However, the pool of Malaysian women running longer distance is still small, with the total number of women running half and full marathons almost always 15% of the men running.
The question on the minds of organisers is “Why are ladies behind in the sport of long distance running?” The answer was that the ladies lacked the support to go run longer distance. Since long distances require training, many women are not sure of which group to run with and unsure of their own capability.
MWM attempts to solve these issues by having guided long run sessions every weekend with a team of runners who will lead, pace or sweep from the back, new runners who are training to run the full marathon or the half marathon. There are also mentoring sessions that encompasses training plan, tips, guiding sessions and motivational advices. Thanks to the guided sessions, MWM have a record of 80 women who are running their first full marathon and hundreds of newbies for their first half marathon.
With the support of Tourism Selangor and the Selangor State Committee for Women and Families Affair and Selangor State Committee, MWM 2015 is back to celebrate International Women Day on a bigger scale.
“MWM thus far has only been recorded in Selangor’s Event Calendar but not recognized officially as a sport’s event, we will look into this and get MWM to be listed in Selangor’s sports events,” said YB Amirudin Bin Shari, EXCO Chairman for Youth & Sports Development, Culture & Entrepreneurship of Selangor at the launch.
Many of MWM’s sponsors for this year are also eager to see to the success of the women running. Etiqa Insurance and Takaful has stepped in to be the MWM Etiqa Half Marathon category sponsor whilst Citibank Malaysia took the title sponsorship for the MWM Citi 10km run. MWM’s 5km run is currently known as MWM Astrobella 5km run. Also back supporting MWM are Perodua Malaysia as Official Car, NTV7 as Official TV station, Garmin as Official Watch, Compressport Malaysia as Official Compression wear and Inov8 as Official Shoes.
Winner of the full marathon will win cash prize of RM2,800 and RM1,800 for runner-up. For full details of prizes, marathon routes and Malaysia Women Marathon go to https://mwmarathon.site.socxs.com
